June 23, 2009 Rescue Squad 27 on Another 26 Box Around 1345 the Rescue Squad was dispatched to Insey Street in District Heights for the reported house fire. Engine 826 arrived on scene with smoke showing confirming a working fire. The Rescue Squad arrived and assumed the RIT Duties. The Squad cleared an hour later.
June 22, 2009 Squad and B Chief Catch a Fire on the Pike At 1445 Rescue Squad 27 and Chief 27 B responded to the 5200 Blk of Marlboro Pike for the report of a building on fire. BC 803 arrived on scene with fire showing from a church. The Rescue Squad arrived on scene and was assigned RIT Duties. The Rescue Squad and B Chief cleared in just over an hour.
June 20, 2009 1 Trapped 1 Pinned in 29's Area As the crew was getting ready to relax for the night, a phone call came in advising 2 trapped on St Barnabas Rd. The squad marked up on the air as the call was being dispatched for St. Barnabas Rd and South Barnaby Dr. for the vehicle collision with reported entrapment. Units arrived to find 1 patient trapped and 1 patient pinned in the same vehicle. Rescue Squad 27 began working on the car gaining access to the patients. Command requested a second squad for more manpower. Rescue Squad 27 and 8 worked together to free both victims.
June 20, 2009 2 Trapped on the Beltway Around 0145 hrs, the Rescue Squad, Chief and A Chief responded to the inner loop of the beltway north of Branch for the report of a vehicle accident. Rescue Squad 27 arrived to find 2 patients trapped in 2 separate vehicles. Both Patients were quickly extricated from their vehicles. While cleaning up, One of the citizens stuck in traffic became agitated and tried to squeeze past the squad, almost striking a firefighter. The driver was removed from his vehicle by the state police and given a field sobriety test. After failing the test he was arrested.
June 15, 2009 Engine to 26 Apartment Fire At 0945 hrs Engine 27 was alerted to the 6400 blk of Pennsylvania Ave for the Apartment Fire. Engine 27 was dispatched as the second due engine and arrived as such securing the primary water supply and advancing a line to the fire building. Shortly after arrival due to the heavy fire conditions on divisions 1 and 2 a second alarm was sounded. The engine crew worked to extinguish the fire and check for extension. After approximately 4 hours the crew returned to service.
June 15, 2009 While in Ocean City for the annual Maryland State Fireman's Convention, President Charlie Phillips was in inducted into the Maryland State Fireman's Association Hall of Fame for 60 years of service to the fire service. Also while we celebrate this milestone in history, President Charlie Phillips also celebrated his 75th Birthday at the Company Dinner this year. Congratulations Charlie !!
June 14, 2009 The Officers and Members of Morningside Volunteer Fire Department would like to show its condolences to the Chapel Oaks Fire Department in the lost of Mr. Gary Hazlip. Mr. Hazlip was a 52 year veteran of the department who died of complications of a earlier heart attack. God Speed Mr. Hazlip. Rest in Peace. For burial information visit www.chapeloaksfire.com
June 14, 2009 Rescue Squad to Beltway Roll Over Shortly after returning to quarters from the kitchen fire in 32's area, the Rescue Squad was dispatched to the beltway for the report of an overturned vehicle. Public Safety Communications having had several calls on the accident and several locations started to assignments one to the Beltway at Pennsylvania, and the other to the Beltway at St. Barnabas Rd. Battalion Chief 3 was first on the scene and advised the units it was the Beltway and Suitland Rd. Rescue Squad 27 was the first suppression unit on scene first confirming everyone was out of the car and then tending to the patients of the car. These patients were packaged up and transported to PG Trauma via A29 and A42. Rescue Squad 27 returned to service after 40 min.
June 14, 2009 Rescue Squad on 32 Kitchen Fire At 0426 the box was sounded for 3700 BLK of Ashboro Ct. in company 32's first due, sending units from the 5th, 3rd, and 7ths Battalion's to the scene. Engine 32 arrived on scene with a 2 story split level house with smoke showing. Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched as the third due special service but arrived first. Being Assigned by Command to assume the first due special service responsibilities, the crew quickly assisted with checking for extension, competing a secondary search, set up lights and a fan. The Rescue Squad was able to return to service after about an hour.
June 12, 2009 Rescue Squad to Branch Ave and Auth Road Rescue Squad 27 along with Engine and Ambo from company 29 were alerted to the intersection of Branch Ave and Auth Rd for a PIA. Rescue Squad 27 was first arriving of a scene with several cars on both the north bound and south bound lanes of Branch Ave. On the north bound side the Rescue Squad found an unresponsive patient will shallow breathing trapped in the back of his car. The crew quickly stabilized and called for the full rescue assignment bringing a medic unit to the critical patient. The Rescue Squad made quick work of the car in removing a rear door to gain entry to the patient. At this point the crew assisted the BLS crew from 29 load the patient and support his breathing via a bag value mask (BVM). On the south bound side Engine 29 had several cars requiring 3 additional transport units to be called. After assisting with EMS care the crew returned to service about 45 min after dispatch.
June 11, 2009 Engine Runs another auto Fire Just before midnight the engine was dispatched for an auto fire in the area of Eastern Lane and Suitland Rd. The Engine company arrived and found and auto fully evolved. This was the second suspected stolen auto that was set on fire in 2 days. Pumping on the auto fires has been a proving time for one of the live-ins to finish up his drivers training.
June 10, 2009 Engine 272 Returns Engine 272 being a County owned engine has been used by many different stations over the past few months as a reserve wagon. Morningside VFD is happy to have our second wagon back in quarters.
June 7, 2009 Rescue Squad, Chief and "A" Chief on Suitland Parkway Fatal PIA Around 2300 hrs the Rescue Squad was dispatched for one off the road and one trapped on Suitland Parkway in the area of Forestville road. The Rescue Squad arrived first and found that they had a total of 4 patients. The first two were out of the vehicle and were later transported to PG trauma because of there injuries. Down in the woods the crew found a vehicle on its side with one patient partially ejected who was pronounced a priority 4. The final patient was trapped form her waist down. Due to the severity of the damage around the trapped patient a lengthy extrication took place. Many different tools and techniques were needed to get the patients out. With the high temps and the amount of time Rescue Squad 27 had been working Command (Chief 27A) requested Rescue Squad 8 to assist 27. Due to the unknown of how much more time was needed Shock Trauma's GO-TEAM was requested to the call. Thankfully a short while later the patient was extricated and loaded on Eagle 1 and transported to Med Star.
June 6, 2009 Company 27 Takes advantage of the Good Weather With the past few days bringing several storms thru Morningside, Company 27 has spent most of there time running personal injury accidents (PIAs) with the Rescue Squad. Today with the good weather Company 27 spent time in the community teaching fire safety and prevention at a local Church's community day.
After a few hours educating our community Company 27 returned to work on ourselves by; conducting drivers training with new drivers, working with current drivers, and sharpening our hose line advancement skills.
June 3, 2009 Rescue Squad on 29 Apartment Fire Around 1000 HRS this morning the box was struck for 3001 Branch Ave, in company 29's first due. Rescue Squad 27 with the day crew were out on the air and alerted to the call. The crew arrived and began first due special service responsibilities, working with Engine company 29. The crews found a couch fire on division one. The Rescue Squad helped make quick work of the fire started a primary search of the fire room, and assisted in checking for extension. The crew operated for just over an hour before returning to service.
May 31, 2009 Company 27 "Staffing Day" for 24 Hours Based on the budget constraints of today's economic times, many Volunteer firehouses are asked to provide complete coverage while their career crews are detailed out to reduce overtime. Company 27 spent the day drilling, taking care of the apparatus, cleaning the station, and handling 16 calls for service. time. Company 27 spent the day drilling, taking May 30, 2009 Engine on 21 House Fire At 0546 HRS Companies from the 5th and 3rd Battalions were alerted for a house fire in the 6900 blk of Sunnyside Ln. Engine 27 was dispatched as the 4th due engine; arrived and carried out there job. Units found a small fire which was quickly extinguished. Engine 27 cleared and return to service after 30 min.
May 28, 2009 Engine on 29 Apartment Fire Around 1400 HRS a street assignment was dispatched to the 3400 blk of Parkway Terrace. Engine 29 arrived with smoke showing and filled the box, bringing Engine 27 as the third due engine. The crew established a secondary water supply and advanced a line to side "C" and threw a ladder to make entry above the fire floor. The fire was contained and extinguished. Engine 27 was then placed in service and was able to clear after operating for about 40 min.
May 26, 2009 Rescue Squad on 8 Townhouse Fire At 0022 HRS Companies from the 1st and 3rd Battalions were alerted to the 1100 blk of Castlehaven Ct for the Townhouse fire. Engine Company 8 arrived and advised they had an end of the row townhouse with fire showing from side "C" on divisions 1 and 2 with fire thru the roof. Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched as the third special service but arrived second and was assigned the first due special services responsibilities due to other units staffing levels. The crew began a primary search on divisions 1 and 2 until command ordered the evacuation of the fire building. The crew was then assigned to open up in the exposure, and later assist with overhaul.
Rescue Squad operated for just about 2 hours before returning to service.
